The Holocene Period
The Holocene Period tells the story of the natural environment of Taiwan from the late Ice Age to the present time. The biological and manmade influences have shaped the characteristic of this island. Questions are asked to inspire self-reflection, - What have we done? What kind of future are we heading?
Following the corridor of sea floating plants, we now enter a new period. The exhibition "Taipei Basin and the East Coast" illustrates the interaction between the prehistoric humans and the changes in the natural environment. The exhibition of "Taiwan in the Eyes of Explorers", on the other hand, compares the explorers' logs taken hundreds of years ago with the present environment to show the vast environmental changes. The exhibition of "Disasters of Foreign Species" reminds the visitors of the irreplaceable ecological damages caused by introducing foreign species to Taiwan.
The motif of this exhibition is Taiwan's natural environment at the present stage. The display of versatile print media, four ecological exhibition sections and the mural of misty forest highlights the biodiversity of Taiwan. Positive and negative images, together with large mirrors installed at the end of the exhibition room, allow the visitors to take a moment to contemplate over the past, present and future of the natural history of Taiwan.
